Use of autologous platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of chronic anal fissure: a case series

Summary

Introduction: A chronic anal fissure is one of the most frequent and disabling proctologic pathologies. Its therapeutic management is complicated in patients with recurrence or high risk of anal incontinence.

Objective: This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of autologous platelet-rich plasma infiltration in the treatment of chronic anal fissure.

Material and methods: A descriptive retrospective observational study was carried out in 16 patients treated at our center for chronic anal fissure with autologous platelet-rich plasma.

Result: The evolution was satisfactory in all the patients, since in 94% of them the proctalgia had diminished or disappeared during the first 48 hours. One month after treatment, 89% of patients had healed the fissure. Limitations: This study was limited by its small sample size. In addition, long-term follow-up of the patients was not reported.

Conclusions: The use of autologous platelet-rich plasma is an alternative in the medical treatment of anal fissure with good results, highlighting the resolution of proctalgia in the first 48 hours.
